Using Your Resiliency to Embrace Change and Keep You Focused

As humans, we either are very resistant to change or we love change. For example, there are some people I know who thrive in the fast-paced world with lots of changes and new challenges. I also know others who are like, “Please don’t even ask me to take a different route to the grocery story. I like my routine!”

There is no harm or shame in either one!

That said, if you fall on the side of needing to embrace change more (and I mean, most of us could be embracing change with a little less resistance if I’m being honest), I’d encourage you to tap into your resiliency! Here’s what I mean by that…!

I Am Rubber, You Are Glue

Did you ever say that as a kid? Or do your kids say it now? When I think of resiliency, I think of being made of rubber! Whether it’s big or small, I picture bouncing up from it and moving along in the trajectory I was aiming at in the first place, like one of those big, bouncy, rubber balls!

Think of March 2020. We all had big dreams and visions for our year and then -BAM- curveball. And I don’t know about you, but even though it wasn’t the year we had thought, hoped, planned, and prepared for, it was still a year of big breakthroughs because of the resiliency we all have to pick ourselves up and keep going, even in the face of great adversity.

I know this about humans: We adapt. We adapt to any circumstance that comes our way. Pretty soon, we forget what it was like before we adapted, simply because this is the way of life now and we can’t imagine it any other way. This is true for adaptations that happen because of negative forces and certainly true for adaptations born from positive results.

There will be highs and there will be lows. What can you do? Prepare for the lows. Bolster yourself and get ready to send a rally cry to the people in your circle. The cry they’ll hear that they immediately know is a call for help, a call to fortify.

And plan for the highs. Dream big, align yourself with energy that feels intentional and strong, create a plan of action with tangible steps you will follow. Envision and commit. A plan that will blend your soul’s desires with strategic action and specific to-dos so you can take on whatever comes next with clarity, focus, and drive.

Having the resiliency to embrace changes that come at you helps you to both prepare and absorb the lows while you also plan for and take action on the highs.

When Change Sneaks Up On You

Sometimes, change sneaks up on us. Instead of coming up like a sneak attack that rocks our foundation, it can be a slow, measured turn until pretty soon, we’re facing in a totally opposite direction with no idea of how we got like that in the first place. (This can happen for the good or for the bad, by the way!)

That’s the thing about making progress — you don’t see it as it’s happening. You just wake up and almost out of nowhere, you’re a new person. Your resiliency was called in, you persevered, and you were delivered to your new amazing life without even realizing it.

As you work through your goals you often do (ie: day by day, step by step), it’s so easy to grow and progress without being aware of how you’ve embraced that natural change as you pivoted your direction.

It’s such that you make progress without really seeing progress being made. Because here’s the thing: Time is always going to pass. Having a solid sense of resilience and focus will help you make something of that time!

Using Resiliency to Make Embracing Change Easier

Picture this: It’s 6 months from now. You have been knocked around a little, because life just does that, yet each time you’ve faced a challenge, you got back up and kept moving forward.

What picked you up and kept you moving? You had an anchor, an idea, a vision, a thought, an inner knowing… You had a north star guiding you forward!

This resiliency, this focus, is only possible when you get so clear on what you want for your life, nothing can tempt you away from it.

It’s almost like you’re Arnold Schwarzenegger walking purposefully out of an explosion at the end of the most epic battle. Things may be crashing down around you, yet you’re so focused on your mission, your calling, that the only choice you have is to keep moving forward.

That’s what it looks like to use your resiliency to make embracing change easier. You bounce back up because you’re focused so intently on the one thing you want more than anything else in life.

Let’s say you had a sales call that didn’t go well. Do you choose to turn off your phone and take yourself to a pity-party lunch, even though you have a nagging feeling that the next YES is right around the corner? Or do you use your stores of resiliency to shake off that energy and make some cold calls because you’re so focused on hitting your sales target so you can put a certain amount of money in your family’s vacation fund?

Either way is fine AND I hope you choose the resilient path. I hope you are so focused on what your goal is, nothing knocks you off guard. I hope you have the strength of your convictions and determination to make it through to embrace whatever change you’re given.

When you’re equipped to use what you’ve learned and bring it with you to strengthen your resiliency for the next time you get knocked down (because you will get knocked down again. It happens to all of us - it's part of life) you become unstoppable!
